Superman getting the "Batman" Treatment

Recently it has been announced that Christopher Nolan will "mentor" the new Superman film (If and when it happens seeing they have a 2013 deadline for the rights). This my take the form of him choosing the director cast and crew or just giving side pointers to the director when one is chosen to take the role.

I've seen a great many people cheer for this. All of them in hopes Nolan will do what he did to the Batman franchise to Superman. Recreate the hero in modern eyes so that generations may know how cool this son of Krypton could be. It could be darker, bloodier, and sexier than the Christopher Reeves' Superman. Maybe Lex Luthor will have a Mohawk and tattoos running around the streets of Metropolis with his legion of lawyers and bank executives steeling homes from innocent middle-class Metropolisians...

Okay, so you get my point (No wonder he kept saying "citizens").

Superman is not the same story as Batman. Though I do agree that Christopher Nolan can capture the essence of the character, I'm worried about the modernization attempts to make superheroes look hip (ie: X-men in black spandex, Smallville's Emo Clark Kent, and Spider-Man's Green Goblin looking like he's ready for the X Games). Superman is a story of a man, albeit and alien man, but man nonetheless who has the power of a god deciding to hold back as much of that potential as possible to be "normal."

In a world where "every kid deserves a trophy" bringing up a generation of "entitlement" we have a simple guy from the back neck of the woods type town that is very special indeed, but can't help but love mediocrity with a side of apple pie. He made the epic decision to help when he was needed, only asking in return for others to take action for themselves. This isn't a Messiah Complex, it's a hero who wants people to take responsibility for their own actions so he can go on living a simple relaxing life.

Maybe I'm wrong, dead wrong perhaps. Superman is one of the oldest therefore one of the most complex comic books out there. I do know he's inspired me to live up to not just my potential, but to do what makes me happy, even if I look like a dorky Clark Kent attempting to do it.
